Taking part in a protest against racism and showing support was important to me. So when one was organised in Dorset, I had to get involved. We walked from Bournemouth pier to Boscombe in the rain, but that didn't hold us back. It was moving, of course sad and yet uplifting at the same time of the possibilities that things could change for the better.
I've heard and witnessed racism and couldn't believe some people were convinced it was only an American issue. So many still getting confused with the notion that 'all lives matter', it detracts completely from the point. The message is simple, they want to matter as much, not more, just the same, to have equal rights and live peacefully. As a white person I understand that I will never understand fully, but I'm willing to keep learning. Recognising white privilege exists is a good place to start.
Making signs and spreading support online is not and should not just be a current trend, it is something that we have to remember and reinforce.
One way to start that change and improve society is through education and starting from a young age. The link below is for a petition to include black history in schools, let's make a significant change!
